About Science Data Centre Leibniz-Institute for Solarphysics

The Science Data Centre (SDC) is a service of the Leibniz Institute for Solar Physics (KIS) that stores and manages freely accessible, processed solar observation data and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. It curates, archives and distributes ground-based solar data from telescopes at the El Teide Observatory on Tenerife, develops calibration and processing pipelines for instruments built at KIS, and builds tools for data analysis and higher-level data products. Some data-specific tools are adapted so that people outside the field can work with the data, and the hosted solar data are designed to be largely integrable with national (Punch4NFDI) and international (ESCAPE/EOSC) initiatives at a low level. A stated long-term goal is to allow all data to be processed in the virtual data processing environments developed on those platforms through standardized interfaces. The online archive is accessed through a separate site.

Key features

  • Storage and management of open processed solar observation data and MHD simulations
  • Curation, archiving and distribution of ground-based solar data from El Teide Observatory, Tenerife
  • Calibration and processing pipelines for instruments developed at KIS
  • Data analysis tools and higher-level, high-quality data products
  • Level 2 data products for the Chromospheric Telescope (ChroTel)
  • Data management and storage built on Rucio/dCache
Best for: Solar physics researchers and related scientists who need archived ground-based solar observations or MHD simulation data and supporting analysis tools.
Good for
  • Data are described as freely accessible and prepared for scientific reuse
  • Storage and management are built on Rucio/dCache, with an upgraded single-page website since September 2023
  • Hosted data are designed to be largely integrable with national and international research data initiatives
Watch out for
  • No pricing, licensing or access terms are stated on the homepage
  • Processing all data through standardized interfaces in external virtual environments is described as a long-term goal, not a current offering
  • Adapted tools for non-specialist users are said to be provided only in part
