About Scraper

Scraper is a Python post-processing script for RSS Guard that builds RSS feeds from websites using CSS selectors. Each argument you pass to the script is a CSS selector that identifies an item and its parts, such as its title, description, link, and date. The script is designed for sites that do not offer their own feed.

The script can search for several links within one item, and it can accept Python expressions for cases that CSS selectors cannot handle. It reuses RSS Guard's cookies, so content behind a login can be scraped after signing in through RSS Guard's built-in browser. If no items match, it produces a feed entry containing the page's HTML so the selectors can be checked. Pages that build their content with JavaScript are not run, so their content may not be captured.

Key features

  • Builds RSS feed items from CSS selectors for item, title, description, link, and date
  • Option to find multiple links inside a single item as separate feed entries
  • Python expression mode for selections that CSS selectors cannot make
  • Fixed static values for title or link using a prefix character
  • Optional American Month/Day/Year date parsing for date fields
  • Reuses RSS Guard cookies to scrape content that requires login
Best for: RSS Guard users who want feeds from websites that do not publish one and who are comfortable writing CSS selectors.
Good for
  • Can scrape content behind a login when the user has signed in through RSS Guard's built-in browser
  • Outputs the page's HTML as a feed entry when no items match, which helps with troubleshooting
Watch out for
  • No JavaScript runs on scraped pages, so content loaded by JavaScript may not be captured
  • Requires RSS Guard, since the script runs as a post-processing step within it
  • Python expression arguments are evaluated with eval(), so selectors must be written with care

Scraper FAQ

How does the script access content that requires a login?
It uses the cookies stored by RSS Guard. If you log in to a site using RSS Guard's built-in browser, the script can access that content as well.
What happens if no items are found on a page?
The script generates a feed item containing the HTML dump of the whole page, so you can see what went wrong, such as a Cloudflare block page.
How are arguments passed to the script?
Arguments are separated by spaces. Arguments that contain spaces must be enclosed in double quotation marks. From RSS Guard v4.5.2, single quotation marks can also be used, with backslash escaping as described in the project notes.
