About SMS-IE
SMS-IE (SMS Import / Export) is an open-source Android app for importing and exporting SMS and MMS messages, call logs, contacts, and blocked numbers to and from JSON or NDJSON files. It does not require root access. Contacts import and export are functional but considered experimental.
Version 2.0.0 introduced a new message storage format (v2), using a messages.ndjson file and a ZIP archive that stores MMS binary data separately. This format is not compatible with JSON message files produced by earlier app versions; options include using a 1.x.x version, re-exporting current messages, or an experimental conversion tool that has not been extensively tested. Call log and contact formats remain unchanged for now. Current versions run on Android devices with API level 19 (Android 4.4 KitKat) or later.
