About Tables Generator

Tables Generator is a web-based editor for building LaTeX tables. Users enter data by pasting cells from a spreadsheet or web page, or by importing a CSV or Excel file. They can then merge cells, align text, apply bold or italic formatting, and add or remove borders. The LaTeX code updates as the table is edited and can be copied to the clipboard for use in a document.

The tool also reads existing LaTeX table code, so a table can be edited after it has been pasted in. A table can be saved as a file and loaded again later. The site notes that some functions may not work in every browser and suggests Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox if a problem occurs.

Key features

  • Paste cell data from spreadsheets or web tables, or import CSV and Excel files
  • Merge and split cells, and align cell text
  • Add, remove, and edit horizontal and vertical table borders
  • Booktabs table style option for rules without vertical lines
  • Column widths that wrap long text, with an option to fit the table to the text width
  • Escape special LaTeX characters by default, with an option to write LaTeX commands in cells
Best for: People who need to create or edit LaTeX tables without writing the table code by hand, such as authors preparing documents.
Good for
  • The LaTeX code updates automatically as the table is edited
  • Existing LaTeX table code can be pasted in and edited
  • A table can be saved as a file and loaded again later
Watch out for
  • Some functions may not work in all browsers
  • Scaling a table to the text width also shrinks its text, which most style guides advise against

Tables Generator FAQ

Can I edit a table that I already have in LaTeX?
Yes. Paste the table's LaTeX code into the editor using File / From LaTeX code.
How can I keep a table so I can edit it later?
Use Save table and click the Download button. The saved file can be loaded again with the Load table option.
Why do LaTeX commands in my cells not appear as code in the output?
Special characters such as %, &, _, # and $ are escaped by default so they print as typed. To write LaTeX such as math or \cite{key} in cells, uncheck Escape special characters in the options.
