About UEA Stemmer

UEA Stemmer is a Ruby implementation of the UEA-Lite stemmer, a rule-based tool that reduces words to a base form for search and indexing. It uses a rule set to normalize suffixes while avoiding aggressive stemming, so it aims to be conservative. The gem has no runtime dependencies and requires Ruby 3.1 or newer. It is a port of a Java version of a Perl script by Marie-Claire Jenkins and Dr. Dan J. Smith at the University of East Anglia.

The stemmer processes one token at a time and returns a stemmed token. Some tokens are handled by specific rules: possessive apostrophes are removed, contractions are expanded by default, uppercase-initial tokens are preserved, and pure numbers and hyphenated or underscored tokens pass through unchanged. The project is distributed under the Apache 2.0 License.

Key features

  • Stems a single token at a time and returns the stemmed word
  • Returns the matched rule number and rule with stem_with_rule
  • Expands contractions by default, such as don't to do not
  • Allows contraction expansion to be turned off with skip_contractions
  • Removes possessive apostrophes and preserves tokens starting with uppercase letters
  • Passes pure numbers and hyphenated or underscored tokens through unchanged
Best for: Ruby developers building search or indexing features who want a conservative, rule-based stemmer with no runtime dependencies.
