About UNITE

UNITE is a database and sequence management environment centred on the eukaryotic nuclear ribosomal ITS region. It clusters all eukaryotic ITS sequences from the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration into species hypotheses, approximately at species level, with steps of 0.5%. Each species hypothesis is given a DOI to support unambiguous scientific communication and data assembly. The site is operated by a non-profit association.

Users can browse and search the species hypotheses, run analyses, and download precompiled reference datasets for local sequence similarity searches and high-throughput sequencing pipelines. Third-party sequence and metadata annotation is supported. Advanced features of the accompanying PlutoF workbench require registration. The site describes itself as a community effort that depends on users contributing expert annotations.

Key features

  • Clusters eukaryotic ITS sequences from INSD into species hypotheses at 0.5% steps
  • Assigns a DOI to each species hypothesis for citation
  • Version-numbered species hypothesis codes that remain resolvable after publication
  • Earlier SH versions available for browsing and reproducing identifications
  • Downloadable reference datasets for local similarity searches and HTS pipelines
  • Release files available for all eukaryotes or for fungi only
Best for: Researchers who identify fungi or other eukaryotes from ITS sequences and need citable, species-level identifiers.
Good for
  • Each species hypothesis has a DOI, supporting unambiguous scientific citation
  • Version-numbered codes can be resolved even when published years earlier
  • Precompiled reference datasets can be downloaded for local searches and pipelines
Watch out for
  • Advanced PlutoF workbench features require registration
  • Earlier species hypothesis versions can be browsed but not annotated or changed
  • The site relies on users contributing expert annotations to the database

UNITE FAQ

Can earlier species hypothesis versions be used?
Earlier versions are stored and can be browsed and used to reproduce identifications. They cannot be annotated or changed.
Is registration required?
Registration is needed to access the more powerful features of the accompanying PlutoF workbench.
Which release files are offered?
Two versions are available: one covering all eukaryotes, including fungi, and one covering fungi only.
