About Wayne's Word

Wayne's Word is a static, hand-coded HTML website about biological and botanical topics, described by its author as an "Online Textbook of Natural History." It contains more than 1,700 HTML files and roughly 15,000 images, organized into indexes and article archives covering plants, ants, fungi, lichens, spiders and insects, evolution, California flora and related subjects, along with peer-reviewed material and a bibliography. Pages were originally designed for projection on classroom screens, and the site can load and project offline from an SD card or flash drive for lectures without internet connectivity. It was hand-coded by W.P. Armstrong using the Arachnophilia source code editor and now resides on a case-sensitive UNIX server at Network Solutions, where some image files still need case correction to display.

Wayne's Word FAQ

Does Wayne's Word work without an internet connection?
Yes. The site loads and projects offline from an SD card or flash drive, which the author notes is useful for lecture presentations without internet connectivity.
Can the text size be adjusted?
Yes. The site gives instructions to increase or decrease size using Control (Ctrl) + on PCs and Command (⌘) + on Macs, and shows an example display with and without size adjustment on a large monitor.
Are the online classes still offered?
No. Plants & People (Botany 115) and General Biology Lecture (Biology 101) are no longer offered, since the University of Hawaii online testing program is no longer supported.
