About Webpages

Netabc is a Tcl/Tk interface for creating web pages from ABC music notation files using the abc2svg JavaScript library. It opens an ABC file, lets the user select a tune, and generates an HTML file that displays the tune as scalable vector graphics in the browser and plays it with follow-along when a displayed note is clicked.

It supports different methods for embedding ABC content, formatting options, custom tempo and MIDI parameters, and assignment of MIDI instruments to voices. It requires Tcl/Tk 8.5 or 8.6, except the Windows netabc.exe build which includes the interpreter, and by default links generated pages to the remote abc2svg library.

Key features

  • Create HTML pages from ABC notation files using abc2svg
  • Render ABC tunes as scalable vector graphics in browser
  • Play tune by clicking displayed notes with follow-along
  • Assign different MIDI instruments to separate voices
  • Embed custom tempo, formatting, and MIDI parameters
  • Forward only selected portion to handle large files
Best for: People who have ABC notation files and want to generate playable notation pages for browsers.
Good for
  • Displays and plays notation in browser without separate PostScript, PDF, or MIDI software
  • Generated HTML file is saved locally for viewing or editing
  • Windows executable includes Tcl/Tk interpreter so separate install is not needed
Watch out for
  • Requires Tcl/Tk 8.5 or 8.6 when not using the Windows executable
  • Large ABC files can overload abc2svg, so only the selected portion is forwarded
  • Local copy of abc2svg library becomes outdated quickly and must be built before use
