About Webwormhole

WebWormhole creates ephemeral pipes between computers to send files or other data using peer-authenticated WebRTC. One computer generates a one-time word code for sending, and the other computer enters that code to establish a connection. Session descriptions are exchanged with protection from a CPace PAKE and generated password, and include fingerprints of the DTLS certificates used by WebRTC.

It can be used through the web client, a command-line tool, and a browser extension for Firefox and Chrome, and the signalling server and web files can be self-hosted. The project is described as still in early development using experimental cryptographic libraries without security or cryptography review, and its public signalling and relay servers have no uptime guarantees.

Key features

  • Send files using one-time word codes
  • Receive files by entering matching one-time code
  • Command-line tool installable with Go 1.13 or newer
  • Browser extension for Firefox and Chrome loading no remote code
  • Self-hostable signalling server and web client files
  • WebRTC connections with NAT traversal and DTLS certificates
Best for: Users comfortable with experimental open-source tools who want direct computer-to-computer transfers using one-time codes.
Good for
  • Open source with source files distributed under BSD-style license
  • Protocol does not need to trust signalling server for confidentiality of transfers
  • Browser extension loads no remote code and requires no permissions
Watch out for
  • Still in early development and described as possibly broken and unsafe
  • Uses experimental cryptographic libraries without security or cryptography review
  • Public signalling and relay servers have no uptime guarantees

Webwormhole FAQ

Is it compatible with magic-wormhole?
It is not.
Do you have to trust the web server to use it?
The application itself does not need to trust the signalling server because of the PAKE. You can use the command-line tool, browser extension, or self-hosted web files to avoid trusting the signalling server.
Why does it not use the PGP word list?
Some PGP word combinations make unsavoury phrases, so it switched to a more agreeable word list.
