WhatCable
WhatCable reports USB-C cable speed, charging power, and e-marker data in a Mac app for Apple Silicon.

About WhatCable
WhatCable is a menu bar app for Apple Silicon Macs that reads USB-C and USB Power Delivery details exposed by macOS and explains the port, cable, charger, adapter and connected device together in plain English. It identifies charging, data-speed and display bottlenecks, decodes e-marker data from marked cables, and can show the original macOS readings in engineer mode.
It works from the identity a cable reports and what the Mac negotiated, and cannot see inside the cable jacket. Contributed observations can be added to a searchable public database, with nothing uploaded without user action.
Key features
- Identifies whether cable, charger, or Mac limits charging rate
- Decodes e-marker speed, current rating, and vendor identity
- Shows data-speed bottleneck across port, cable, and device
- Flags display resolution and refresh shortfalls with cause
- Warns of mid-session overcurrent and reconnection faults
- Provides CLI with JSON output and port watch mode
- Explains charger, cable, port and device together instead of raw readings
- Shows original macOS data in engineer mode for verification
- Runs without helper daemon, private API use, or background uploads
- Limited to Apple Silicon Macs and data macOS exposes
- Cannot inspect inside the cable jacket, only reported and negotiated data
- Trust flags highlight unusual e-marker values but do not confirm a fake
