About Zoomquilt
Zoomquilt is a website that displays an infinitely zooming image, a painting created in 2004 by Nikolaus Baumgarten with contributions from a group of illustrators. The site shows a continuous zoom through the artwork, and visitors can move through it with the up and down keys. The project was first released in Shockwave and Flash and was ported to modern web standards in 2013.
The site is part of a series. Zoomquilt 2 was released in 2007, Arkadia (a botanical fantasy plant world, made with Sophia Schomberg) in 2015, and Infinite Flowers in 2022. The homepage also links to a screensaver for Mac and a live wallpaper for Android. The project was inspired by the collaborative Gridcosm picture and by earlier infinite zoom films from 1968.
