About AERONET

AERONET is a federation of ground-based sun and sky scanning radiometer networks established by NASA and PHOTONS with other networks, calibration centers, and collaborators. It provides a public domain database of aerosol optical, microphysical and radiative properties, including spectral aerosol optical depth, inversion products and precipitable water for aerosol research and validation of satellite retrievals.

It includes Ocean Color measurements from offshore platforms, ship-borne measurements through the Maritime Aerosol Network, and solar flux measurements through SolRad-Net. Version 3 is the current database with three quality levels, while Version 2 data are available through 2018 and thereafter only upon special request.

Key features

  • Solar Version 3 aerosol optical depth display, download, and climatology tables
  • Lunar Version 3 aerosol optical depth display and download tools
  • Aerosol inversion products including polarized data downloads and web service
  • Ocean Color water-leaving radiance measurements from offshore platforms
  • Ship-borne ocean aerosol measurements from Maritime Aerosol Network
  • High-frequency solar flux measurements collocated with AERONET sites
Best for: Researchers and agencies needing ground-based aerosol, water vapor, and ocean color measurements for research and satellite validation.
Good for
  • Long-term, continuous public domain database maintained for more than 25 years
  • Standardized instruments, calibration, processing, and distribution across the federation
  • Globally distributed observations covering diverse aerosol regimes
Watch out for
  • Version 2 data are available through 2018, then only upon special request
  • Loaned instrument pool is limited with preference for U.S. states and territories
  • Loan hosts must provide logistical support, shipping, and maintenance

AERONET FAQ

What data quality levels are used for Version 3 aerosol optical depth?
Level 1.0 is unscreened, Level 1.5 is cloud-screened and quality-controlled, and Level 2.0 is quality-assured.
How can older Version 2 data be obtained?
Version 2 data may be downloaded through 2018 and thereafter upon special request.
What are the terms of the instrument loan initiative?
NASA provides a calibrated instrument free of cost for 3 to 24 months, while the host institution covers logistical support, shipping, and maintenance. Instruments are limited with preference for institutions in U.S. states and territories.
