About Barcode of Life Data Systems

Barcode of Life Data Systems supports species identification through DNA barcodes. It provides a Data Portal with over 21.1m public records representing 1.7m species, sequence matching against reference libraries, Barcode Index Numbers that cluster animal sequences into operational taxonomic units, and a Workbench to manage, analyze and publish barcode data.

Portal records are public and fully accessible, while remaining records await validation and release. Unknown samples are identified to species present in the reference library. BOLDv5 has a more complex site structure with tutorials still being developed, and BOLDv4 remains accessible at v4.boldsystems.org.

Key features

  • Match DNA sequences against reference libraries for species identification
  • Access Data Portal with over 21.1m public records for 1.7m species
  • Cluster animal barcode sequences into BIN operational taxonomic units
  • View dedicated BIN pages consolidating data for member records
  • Manage, analyze and publish DNA barcode data in Workbench
  • Download large volumes of data through Data portal
Best for: Researchers identifying specimens through DNA barcodes and examining biodiversity patterns.
Good for
  • Public portal records are fully accessible
  • Each BIN links to a page consolidating available member data
  • Works with major biodiversity initiatives for interoperability and data access
Watch out for
  • Remaining records await validation and release and are not yet public
  • Unknown samples can only be identified to species present in reference library
  • BOLDv5 has a more complex site structure with tutorials still being developed

Barcode of Life Data Systems FAQ

How does BOLD identify species from DNA?
DNA is extracted from the specimen, target regions are amplified by PCR and sequenced, then the sequence is matched against reference libraries to find the closest records.
Are all BOLD records publicly accessible?
No. Records in the Data Portal are public and fully accessible; the remaining records await validation and release.
What is a Barcode Index Number (BIN)?
An automated method that clusters animal DNA barcode sequences into operational taxonomic units, with each cluster assigned a unique identifier and a dedicated page for its members.
