About coastDat

coastDat is a model-generated database designed primarily to assess long-term changes in data-poor regions. It uses numerical models to reconstruct marine climate conditions such as storms, waves and storm surges, as well as ecosystem processes including hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry, over many decades. The reconstructions rely on large-scale information such as large-scale atmospheric conditions and aim to be as consistent and homogeneous as possible.

Where possible, the reconstructions are supplemented by climate change projections to assess potential future changes. The approach has been applied to issues in the North and Baltic Seas, including offshore wind farm planning, wind and storm surge climate changes, primary production, and eutrophication. The dataset is used by more than 100 users: about 40% in industry, 15% in public authorities, and 45% in research institutes.

Key features

  • Reconstructs marine climate aspects including storms, waves, and storm surges over many decades.
  • Models hydrodynamics and biogeochemical ecosystem processes over many decades.
  • Relies on large-scale atmospheric conditions to create consistent, homogeneous data.
  • Adds climate change projections where possible for future change assessment.
  • Applied to North and Baltic Seas issues such as offshore wind planning.
  • Used by over 100 users in industry, public authorities, and research.
Best for: Researchers, industry users, and public authorities assessing long-term marine climate and ecosystem changes in data-poor regions, especially the North and Baltic Seas.
Good for
  • Aims to create data that is as consistent and homogeneous as possible.
  • Covers multiple marine climate and ecosystem aspects over many decades.
  • Supplemented by climate change projections where possible.
Watch out for
  • The dataset is model-generated rather than observational.
  • Relies only on large-scale information such as large-scale atmospheric conditions.
  • Climate change projections are included only where possible.
