About Conversations

Conversations is an open-source XMPP/Jabber client for Android that connects to Jabber, XMPP and Snikket servers. It supports messaging with OMEMO or OpenPGP end-to-end encryption, image and file sharing, encrypted audio and video calls, group chats, and multiple accounts.

XMPP is federated, so use requires an account from a provider such as conversations.im or another server, or a self-run server. Some features depend on server support and can be checked under account details, and channel-binding detection requires opt-in.

Key features

  • End-to-end encryption with OMEMO or OpenPGP
  • Send and receive images and other files
  • Encrypted audio and video calls with DTLS-SRTP
  • Private group chats and public conferences with bookmarks
  • Multiple accounts with unified inbox
  • Share location and send voice messages
Best for: Android users who want to communicate over XMPP/Jabber with a federated provider.
Good for
  • Open source and licensed under GPLv3
  • Does not require a Google account or Firebase Cloud Messaging
  • Low impact on battery life
Watch out for
  • Some features require server support
  • Channel binding detection requires opt-in
  • No single official account; user must find a provider or run own server
