About FoLiA format

FoLiA (Format for Linguistic Annotation) is an XML-based format for representing linguistically annotated written language resources, including corpora. It is intended for storing and exchanging language resources and aims to accommodate a variety of annotation types in one generalised format without committing to a particular label set, language, or linguistic theory.

It uses inline annotation for single tokens and stand-off annotation for multi-token spans, and can represent annotation alternatives and metadata such as annotator, time, and confidence. The format is formalised and machine parsable, with shallow and deep validation including tagset validation. Libraries are available for Python 3, C++, and Rust, along with command-line tools and converters; libfolia has no documentation yet, and the legacy Python library is for Python 2.7.

Key features

  • XML-based format for linguistically annotated written language resources and corpora
  • Generalised annotation paradigm that does not commit to a label set, language, or theory
  • Mixed inline and stand-off annotation for tokens and multi-token spans
  • Supports annotation alternatives and metadata on annotator, time, and confidence
  • Can be validated at shallow and deep levels, including tagset validation
  • Software libraries and command-line tools for working with FoLiA documents
Best for: Developers and researchers who need to store or exchange linguistically annotated written language resources such as corpora in a single XML format.
