About Huginn

Huginn is an open-source system for building agents that monitor events online and take actions on the user's behalf. Agents create and consume events that propagate along a directed graph, so output from one agent can feed another. The project describes itself as a hackable version of IFTTT or Zapier that runs on your own server.

Agents can watch websites for changes, follow terms or project names on Twitter, check weather and travel or shopping deals, send digest email at set times, send SMS when activity spikes, send and receive WebHooks, run custom JavaScript, and connect to services including Slack, JIRA, IMAP, FTP, Jabber, MQTT, RSS, Pushbullet, Pushover, StubHub, Twilio, Weibo and translation APIs. Because it is self-hosted, setup is required: an official Docker image is offered as the quickest way to try it, while local installation needs MySQL or PostgreSQL, Ruby dependencies and configuration of an environment file. No pricing or hosted service is stated in the source.

Key features

  • Build agents that watch for events and act automatically

  • Run custom JavaScript functions and Bash commands
  • Send digest email at set times or SMS on spikes
Best for: Developers and technically comfortable users who want self-hosted, customizable event automation rather than a hosted service.

Huginn FAQ

What is the quickest way to try Huginn?
The project recommends the official Docker image as the quickest and easiest way to check it out, with documentation linked from the repository.
What does a local installation involve?
Forking the repository, copying .env.example to .env and setting at least APP_SECRET_TOKEN, installing MySQL or PostgreSQL, running bundle, creating and seeding the database with rake tasks, then starting with foreman and logging in as admin.
Where does my data go when agents connect to external services?
Huginn runs on your own server, and the project states that you always know who has your data because you do. Note that agents you configure may still send and receive data through third-party services such as Twitter, Slack, Twilio or translation APIs.
