About Linkspector

Linkspector is a GitHub Action that checks for broken links in repository content on pull requests. It runs with Reviewdog to report findings within the pull request workflow.

It supports a custom .linkspector.yml configuration file, selectable Reviewdog reporters and filter modes, and optional link statistics. Enabling statistics causes the check to run twice, increasing total run time.

Key features

  • Checks content links on pull requests via GitHub Action
  • Reports results through Reviewdog with selectable reporter
  • Filters findings by added lines, diff context, file, or no filter
  • Supports custom configuration via .linkspector.yml file
  • Optionally shows statistics about checked links
  • Installs system Chromium on arm64 and self-hosted runners
Best for: Repository maintainers who want broken-link checks on GitHub pull requests.
Good for
  • Open source with MIT license
  • Supports arm64 and self-hosted runners with automatic system Chromium setup
  • Offers configurable reporters, filter modes, and fail levels
Watch out for
  • Enabling show_stats runs the check twice and increases total run time
  • Only reports errors, so changing the report level can result in no output

Linkspector FAQ

How do I use the action in a repository?
Create .github/workflows/action.yml that runs on pull_request, checks out the repository, then uses umbrelladocs/action-linkspector@v1 with github_token.
What does the show_stats option do?
When set to true it shows statistics about checked links, but runs Linkspector twice and increases total run time.
How is Chromium handled on arm64 or self-hosted runners?
The action detects those runners and installs system Chromium with the system package manager, skips installation if Chrome or Chromium is present, or uses the binary set in PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH.
