Ciphey
Ciphey tries to identify and decode encrypted or encoded text without requiring users to know the key or cipher.

About Ciphey
Ciphey is an open-source command-line tool, written in Rust, that tries to identify and decode encoded or encrypted text when the user does not know the key, the cipher, or the encoding. Given an input string, it searches chains of decoders, such as Base64 inside hex inside ROT13, and stops at the first candidate that looks like plaintext. By default it shows that candidate and asks for confirmation before accepting it. It stops after 5 seconds if it finds nothing; the -c option changes this limit.
It can be installed with cargo, using prebuilt binaries for Linux (x86_64), macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), and Windows (x86_64), or built from source with a Rust toolchain. A Discord bot command is also offered as an alternative to installing it. Answers are cached in a local SQLite database, so repeated inputs return faster. The speed comparisons on the page are the project's own measurements from one shared Linux machine.
Key features
- Decodes multi-layer encodings without a key, cipher name, or hints
- Searches chains of decoders and stops at the first plaintext-like candidate
- Knows 24 decoders and crackers, including Base64, hex, Morse, and Caesar
- Works out the key for Vigenère ciphers automatically
- Optional regex or wordlist to accept only matching plaintext
- Flags for scripts: skip the confirmation prompt, read input from a file, set a time limit
- Does not require the user to know the key or cipher
- Open source, with the repository publicly available on GitHub
- Prebuilt binaries include SHA-256 checksums for verification
- Stops after a default 5-second limit, so it may report no result for complex inputs
- Building from source requires a Rust toolchain
- The Discord bot option sends input through Discord, an external service
