Mahout
Apache Mahout develops Qumat, a backend agnostic quantum circuit library, and QDP, a GPU accelerated quantum data encoding engine.

About Mahout
Apache Mahout is an open source project focused on quantum machine learning in Python. It provides Qumat, a library for defining quantum circuits with standard and parameterized gates and running them on Qiskit, Cirq, or Amazon Braket on simulators or hardware, and QDP, a component that converts classical data into quantum states by building state vectors directly in GPU memory.
QDP supports six encodings and works with NVIDIA CUDA and AMD ROCm, with data exchange with PyTorch, NumPy, and TensorFlow. Qumat requires Python 3.10 or newer and installs from PyPI, while the earlier Mahout Classic Samsara and MapReduce codebase is in maintenance mode.
Key features
- Write circuits once and run on Qiskit, Cirq, or Amazon Braket
- Standard and parameterized gates with binding for variational circuits
- Six encodings: amplitude, angle, basis, phase, IQP, and IQP-Z
- Builds state vectors directly in GPU memory without simulating preparation circuits
- Native CUDA kernels and Triton kernels for AMD ROCm
- DLPack zero-copy exchange with PyTorch, NumPy, and TensorFlow
- Single API runs the same circuit on Qiskit, Cirq, and Amazon Braket
- Same six encodings available on both CUDA and ROCm
- Includes SVHN IQP training, kernel SVM, and latency benchmarks
- Earlier Samsara and MapReduce codebase is in maintenance mode
- Qumat installation needs Python 3.10 or newer
- Qumat backend support is limited to Qiskit, Cirq, and Amazon Braket
