About Never Write

NeverWrite is an open-source agentic Markdown workspace for people who keep local vaults and work with multiple AI agents. It combines a Markdown-first editor, knowledge navigation, agent sessions, and explicit review of AI changes in one multipane app. The desktop release supports macOS 13 or later, Windows, and Linux (x64/ARM64). It is licensed under Apache-2.0.

The project describes its files as staying local, and the source does not mention optional cloud backup. Agent sessions depend on the providers you configure: some require their own CLI login or API key, and Pi requires a separate CLI install. Building from source requires Node.js 22.12 or later, Rust and Cargo, and pnpm 10.33.0 for the web clipper.

Key features

  • Edit Markdown, Mermaid, CSV, code, PDFs, images, and Excalidraw files in one workspace
  • Follow wikilinks, backlinks, tags, and advanced search across a vault
  • Explore connected notes in 2D or 3D graph views
  • Run Codex, Claude, Grok, Kilo, OpenCode, or Pi agent sessions with saved transcripts
  • Review AI edits inline, in chat, or in a dedicated review tab
  • Keep or reject complete files or individual hunks of AI changes
Best for: Writers and researchers who keep local Markdown vaults and want to work with AI agents while reviewing each change they make.
Good for
  • Open source under the Apache License 2.0
  • Combines several file formats, navigation, agent sessions, and change review in one app
  • AI edits can be accepted or rejected per file or per hunk
Watch out for
  • Some agent providers require their own CLI login or API key
  • Pi requires a separate CLI install and its own model and credential setup
  • Running a development build alongside the same vault shares files and hidden state, so a disposable vault is advised for testing write or review flows
