openMotor
openMotor simulates internal rocket motor ballistics, estimating chamber pressure and thrust from propellant, grain geometry, and nozzle details.

About openMotor
openMotor is an open-source internal ballistics simulator for rocket motor experimenters. It estimates chamber pressure and thrust from propellant properties, grain geometry, and nozzle specifications, using the Fast Marching Method to model grain regression with arbitrary core geometries.
It includes support for BATES, Finocyl, Star and custom DXF geometries, a propellant editor, ENG export and Burnsim import and export, and design save and load with undo and redo. Running from source requires Python 3.10, Qt6 and additional dependencies, plus separate UI and Cython build steps.
Key features
- Models chamber pressure and thrust from propellant, grain, and nozzle inputs
- Supports BATES, Finocyl, Star and other grain geometries
- Loads custom grain geometry from DXF files
- Propellant editor for entering multiple propellant properties
- Displays grain regression in the grain editor
- Exports ENG files and imports and exports Burnsim files
- Handles arbitrary core geometries using the Fast Marching Method
- Calculations sourced from Sutton's Rocket Propulsion Elements and Richard Nakka's website
- Distributed as a runnable download and via AUR and Debian apt packages
- Source build requires Python 3.10, Qt6, and several Python dependencies
- UI files and Cython code must be built separately before running
- Missing Python headers or C++ runtime on Windows can cause build or import failures
