About Photonix

Photonix is a photo management application. After setup, it reads the photos in a collection and builds an image database that can be searched and filtered by tags. Tags can come from camera metadata such as aperture, shutter speed, GPS location, and date and time; from labels the user adds; and from automatic recognition. The image viewer shows photos full-screen on any device where the user is logged in through the app or a web browser.

The automatic tagging includes face detection, which groups faces of the same person across photos once the user labels them, and object detection, which runs within Photonix so images are not shared externally for that feature. Style and color classifiers are also offered. Location tagging currently works only from GPS data, and the developers say they aim to add recognition for photos without GPS tags in the future. The homepage asks visitors to sign up for notice of the version 1.0 release, which suggests the software is not yet at that version. Pricing is not known.

Key features

  • Imports an existing photo collection into a searchable image database
  • Face detection that groups the same person across photos after labeling

  • Location tags from GPS data, with country and nearest large city
  • Full-screen image viewer showing camera settings and detected tags
Best for: People with large photo collections, including photographers who work with RAW and SLR files, who want to search and filter by tags and automatic recognition.
