About quien

quien is an open-source domain intelligence toolkit distributed as a GitHub repository, with install options for Homebrew, Ubuntu/Debian, Arch Linux (AUR), Nix and Go. It runs as an interactive terminal UI with tabbed views for WHOIS, DNS, mail, SSL/TLS, HTTP headers, SEO analysis and tech stack detection, or as individual commands that return JSON.

Lookups are RDAP-first with WHOIS fallback and IANA referral for WHOIS server discovery. IP lookups add reverse DNS, network information, abuse contacts and ASN discovery, with PeeringDB enrichment for ASN context. Core Web Vitals field data is optional: it requires a Chrome UX Report API key and only appears for domains with enough Chrome traffic to be included in the report.

Key features

  • RDAP-first WHOIS lookups with IANA referral and WHOIS fallback
  • IP lookups with reverse DNS, network info, abuse contacts and ASN
  • Mail audit: MX, SPF, DMARC, DKIM, BIMI with VMC chain validation
  • SEO checks: indexability, on-page elements, structured data, performance hints
  • Tech stack detection for WordPress plugins, JS/CSS frameworks and services
  • JSON subcommands for whois, dns, mail, tls, http, seo, stack and all
Best for: Developers, system administrators and SEO or email administrators on Linux who want domain, mail and web data from one terminal tool.
Good for
  • Open source with installers for Homebrew, Ubuntu/Debian, AUR, Nix and Go
  • Combines whois, DNS, mail, TLS, HTTP, SEO and stack views in one TUI
  • JSON output and per-type subcommands make results usable in scripts
  • Automatic retry with exponential backoff on lookups
Watch out for
  • Core Web Vitals requires a CrUX API key and only covers sites with enough Chrome traffic
  • Lookups depend on external services such as RDAP, WHOIS, PeeringDB and the CrUX API
  • Terminal theme detection can fail in tmux, screen or remote shells, needing a manual override

quien FAQ

How do I enable Core Web Vitals data?
Set QUIEN_CRUX_API_KEY to a Chrome UX Report API key. The API is free, but not all domains have field data; a site needs enough Chrome traffic to be included in the report.
Can I use quien in scripts?
Yes. Use --json for JSON output or subcommands such as quien dns example.com, quien mail example.com or quien all example.com.
Can I choose a DNS resolver or check extra DKIM selectors?
Yes. Use --resolver or QUIEN_RESOLVER for DNS, and --dkim-selector or QUIEN_DKIM_SELECTORS for DKIM. User selectors are probed in addition to the built-in common-selector list.
