About elm-pages

elm-pages is a framework for building Elm single-page apps that use data from an Elm backend. Routes can be server-rendered for user-specific or request-specific data, or pre-rendered at build time to static HTML for CDN hosting, with both types mixed in one app.

It also provides a command to run pure Elm scripts, tools to build terminal apps, and in-process tests for routes and terminal programs.

Key features

  • Mix server-rendered and pre-rendered routes in one Elm app
  • Pre-render routes at build time to static HTML for CDN hosting
  • Server-render routes for user-specific or request-specific data
  • Run pure Elm scripts with a single command
  • Build terminal apps with init/update/view and styled text output
  • Test routes in-process with simulated HTTP and session cookies
Best for: Developers building Elm applications that combine static and server-rendered routes.
Good for
  • Open source with BSD-3-Clause license
  • Allows server-rendered and pre-rendered routes in the same app
  • Includes in-process route tests and terminal program tests without a browser
Watch out for
  • NPM and Elm packages must have a matching Compatibility Key or an error occurs
  • Examples need clone with --recurse-submodules to avoid missing files

elm-pages FAQ

What happens if the NPM and Elm package versions do not match?
An error about the Compatibility Key appears. Upgrading both packages to the latest versions is recommended.
How do I clone the repository to build the examples?
Use git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/dillonkearns/elm-pages.git to avoid missing files.
What is the difference between the two route types?
Server-rendered routes are for dynamic content with user-specific or request-specific data. Pre-rendered routes generate static HTML files at build time for CDN hosting.
