About Quilt

Quilt is a scientific data management platform built on AWS. It turns cloud data into versioned data packages that bundle the data with metadata, documentation, lineage, and version history, so that teams and AI tools can find and reuse it. According to the source, Quilt works with data where it already sits, so organizations can improve data management without migrating data or adopting rigid workflows.

Quilt has two parts. The open-source repository contains a Python SDK and CLI for creating packages, installing them locally, and uploading them to S3 with the user's own AWS credentials. The enterprise platform is a dedicated, AWS-hosted deployment that adds hosted search, sharing, and visualization of packages, along with multi-user collaboration and governance features. The open-source version does not include the full hosted search and visualization experience.

Key features

  • Creates versioned data packages that bundle data with metadata, documentation, and lineage
  • Python SDK and CLI for creating, installing, and uploading packages
  • Uploads packages to S3 using the user's own AWS credentials
  • Works with data in place on AWS without requiring disruptive migrations
  • Enterprise platform provides hosted search, sharing, and visualization of packages
  • Enterprise platform adds multi-user collaboration and governance features
Best for: Scientific, bioinformatics, and data science teams that store data on AWS and need versioned, reusable data packages.
Good for
  • Open source under the Apache-2.0 license
  • Keeps version history and lineage together with the data in each package
  • Works with existing data in place, according to the source
Watch out for
  • The open-source repository does not provide the full hosted search and visualization experience
  • Uploads go to S3 and require AWS credentials, so the workflow depends on AWS
