About TensorForce

Tensorforce is an open-source deep reinforcement learning framework written for Python and built on Google's TensorFlow. It is designed for modular, configurable library use in both research and applied work. Its algorithms are separated from the structure of inputs and outputs and from the environment they interact with, and the full reinforcement learning logic is implemented in TensorFlow so that models can be run independently of the programming language and deployed more easily.

The project is no longer maintained, according to its GitHub page. Installation requires Python 3 and is done with pip, either from the stable PyPI release or from the GitHub source. Some environments need extra packages or separately installed tools, and TensorFlow cannot be installed directly on M1 Macs, so the documentation describes a workaround.

Key features

  • Modular, component-based design with configurable reinforcement learning features
  • Algorithms separated from input and output types and from the environment
  • Full reinforcement learning logic, including control flow, implemented in TensorFlow
  • Installation from the PyPI stable release or the GitHub version
  • Optional setup packages for environments such as gym, ALE, ViZDoom and CARLA
  • Command-line example configurations, including an implementation of Proximal Policy Optimization
Best for: Python developers and researchers who want an open-source, TensorFlow-based deep reinforcement learning framework for experimentation, and who are aware that the project is no longer maintained.
Good for
  • Open source, with code available on GitHub
  • Modular design that separates algorithms from application-specific inputs, outputs and environments
  • Reinforcement learning logic runs as TensorFlow graphs, which the page says supports deployment independent of programming language
Watch out for
  • The project is no longer maintained, according to its homepage
  • TensorFlow cannot be installed directly on M1 Macs, and a documented workaround is required
  • Some environments need additional tools installed separately

TensorForce FAQ

Is Tensorforce still maintained?
No. The GitHub homepage states that the project is not maintained any longer.
Does Tensorforce always benefit from a GPU?
Not necessarily. The documentation notes that reinforcement learning does not always benefit from a GPU, depending on the environment and agent configuration. For environments with low-dimensional state spaces, such as those without images, it suggests trying CPU only.
How is Tensorforce installed?
The stable version can be installed from PyPI with pip3 install tensorforce. The latest GitHub version can be installed by cloning the repository and running pip3 install -e on the local copy.
