About Talos

Talos is an open-source repository of tools for hyperparameter experiments with Keras, TensorFlow and PyTorch. It runs candidate parameter settings against a user's existing model and training code, records trial histories, and helps users inspect, select and recover trained models. The user chooses the data, splits, training method and evaluation protocol.

Talos has moved to a second generation. Talos 2 is in active maintenance, and the Talos 1.x series is supported at least until 2028. The core package supports Python 3.10 to 3.13, and modern Keras and TensorFlow require Python 3.11 or newer. Talos is installed from PyPI with an extra for each framework.

Key features

  • Runs parameter sweeps over Keras, TensorFlow/tf.keras and PyTorch models
  • Grid and sampled searches, reducers, and custom strategies
  • Notebook workflow through a Scan interface, plus Analyze, Predict, Evaluate, Deploy and Restore interfaces
  • Single-file experiment definitions with a manifest and command-line interface
  • Records trial histories, checkpoints and intervention records in content-addressed manifests
  • Trained model recovery, using explicit factories or custom objects where the framework requires them
Best for: Researchers, data scientists and data engineers who want to keep control of their own Keras, TensorFlow or PyTorch models while running parameter experiments.
Good for
  • Keeps the user's existing model and training code in place while Talos runs the candidate settings.
  • Framework imports are optional, so users can install only the extra for their framework.
  • The Talos 1.x series is stated to remain supported at least until 2028.
Watch out for
  • The core package supports Python 3.10 to 3.13, and modern Keras and TensorFlow require Python 3.11 or newer.
  • The latest 1.x release is pinned to talos==1.4 and is installed in a separate Python 3.10 or 3.11 environment.
  • The last confirmed report of mislabeled experiment results in the earlier generation (issue #439, opened 11 December 2019) affected CSV parameter columns on Python 3.5.
