About Urocissa

Urocissa is a self-hosted gallery for photos and videos, built with Rust and Vue. It is designed for very large collections: the project targets serving one million photos on a 4 GB RAM server, using an in-memory cached database to index, search and filter without loading the whole database in the browser. It supports uploads, downloads, EXIF data, user-defined tags, duplicate handling, shareable albums and boolean search, and can be installed with Docker or a Windows installer.

Several features are not supported: multi-user accounts, object or face recognition, geolocation or map views, an Android app, external libraries and existing folders. Discovery is listed as in progress. The two public demos are read-only, so uploading and tag editing are not permitted there.

Key features

  • Indexes photos with a pure Rust crate for serving and search
  • In-memory cached database for instant search and filtering
  • Virtual scrolling photo stream without pagination or lazy loading
  • Boolean search using and, or and not operators
  • Uploads, downloads, EXIF data, user-defined tags and duplicate handling
  • Docker installation, Windows installer and shareable albums
Best for: People or organizations who self-host large photo and video collections and need fast search and browsing on limited server memory.
Good for
  • Aims to serve one million photos on a server with 4 GB of RAM
  • Benchmark estimated roughly 0.49 GiB of RAM per million metadata-only records, scaling linearly in the published table
  • Open source, distributed from a GitHub repository
Watch out for
  • No multi-user support
  • No object or face recognition, geolocation or map views, Android app, external libraries or existing folders
  • Public demos are read-only, and discovery is listed as in progress

Urocissa FAQ

How much memory does Urocissa need for a given number of photos?
The project publishes an estimate based on a local benchmark: about 0.49 GiB for 1 million photos, rising to about 4.91 GiB for 10 million. The figures use metadata-only records, so media files are not included; larger values are linear extrapolations and actual usage may vary with allocator behavior, indexing options and memory reuse.
Can multiple users share one Urocissa instance?
No. Multi-user support is listed as unavailable.
How is Urocissa installed?
Windows users can download an installation file from the Releases page. Linux users can clone the repository and run the run_urocissa_docker.sh script, which starts the app by default at http://127.0.0.1:5673; the port and a password can be configured.
