About World Stress Map

The World Stress Map is a global compilation of information on the present-day stress field in Earth's crust. Maintained since 2009 at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, it analyses stress information in a standardized format and quality-ranks it for reliability and comparability.

The 2025 database release contains 100,842 data records. The open-access database is used by academic and industrial institutions for geodynamics, hazard assessment, reservoir geomechanics, and geotechnical applications, including reservoir management, stability of mines and boreholes, geomechanical modelling, and fault-slip analysis.
