About amux

amux is a self-hosted control plane for running several AI coding agents at once. It coordinates parallel workers such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode and Ollama from one web dashboard or a phone, is SQLite-backed, and ships as a single Rust binary; the repository describes it as MIT-licensed.

Workers share a kanban board where task claiming uses compare-and-swap so two workers cannot take the same card, and marking a task done requires evidence while "verified" requires a peer check. The server records the true sender of inter-worker messages, and users can steer a running session, switch the model or provider mid-run without losing context, schedule cron-style prompts, and rely on a watchdog that auto-compacts, restarts crashed sessions and replays the last message. Setup is local-first: the installer mints the database, TLS material and auth token on first boot, and re-running it upgrades in place without touching existing data.

Key features

  • Shared kanban board with compare-and-swap claiming to prevent duplicate work
  • Inter-worker messaging whose true sender is recorded by the server
  • Cron-style recurring prompts plus self-pacing loops for overnight runs
  • Steering: type into a running session from dashboard or phone
  • Swap model or provider on a running worker while keeping context
  • Optional live sessions, schedules, loops and model switching
  • Self-healing watchdog that restarts crashed sessions and replays last message
Best for: Developers who want to run and supervise multiple AI coding agents on their own infrastructure from a single dashboard or phone.
Good for
  • Local-first, self-hosted and SQLite-backed, distributed as one Rust binary
  • Installer checks prerequisites and prompts before installing Rust toolchain or tmux
  • Re-running ./install.sh upgrades in place and leaves existing data untouched
Watch out for
  • Requires a Rust toolchain and tmux, which the installer prompts to install if missing
  • Dashboard uses a self-signed certificate, so the browser warning must be accepted once
  • No pricing or paid-plan information is given in the source

amux FAQ

How is amux installed?
Clone the repository and run ./install.sh. The installer checks prerequisites, builds the workspace, installs the server and CLI to ~/.local/bin, loads launchd agents on macOS, creates ~/.amux on first boot and prints the dashboard URL and auth token.
What happens when upgrading or removing it?
Re-running ./install.sh upgrades in place and does not touch your data. ./uninstall.sh removes the binaries and agents and leaves ~/.amux alone.
Where does the dashboard run and how do I authenticate?
It runs at https://localhost:8824; accept the self-signed certificate warning once, and the auth token is stored at ~/.amux/auth_token.
