About ERDDAP

ERDDAP is a data server that gives users one consistent way to download subsets of scientific datasets and to make graphs and maps. It acts as a middleman between the user and remote data servers. It reformats each request into the format a remote server needs, retrieves the data, and returns it in the file format the user selected. This installation holds oceanographic data, such as data from satellites and buoys.

ERDDAP standardizes date and time values in its results, using ISO 8601 for string times and seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z for numeric times, with UTC throughout. Users can reach data through web pages or through RESTful web services for scripts and other programs. Many datasets can also be accessed through the Web Map Service (WMS). The interface text is available in multiple languages.

Key features

  • Download subsets of scientific datasets in common file formats
  • Create customized graphs and maps as PNG or PDF images
  • Return data as CSV, JSON, NetCDF, HTML table, or other listed formats
  • Standardize date and time values to ISO 8601 and UTC
  • RESTful web services for programs such as MATLAB and R
  • OPeNDAP and WMS access for many datasets
Best for: Researchers and data users who need scientific datasets from several different sources in one consistent request method and file format.
Good for
  • Requests use one consistent method across different types of data servers.
  • Date and time values are standardized, which makes results easier to compare.
  • Output can be requested in several common file formats.
Watch out for
  • This installation holds oceanographic data, such as satellite and buoy data.
  • WMS access is available for many datasets, not stated to be all of them.

ERDDAP FAQ

How are date and time values formatted in ERDDAP results?
String times use the ISO 8601:2004(E) format, for example 2018-01-02T00:00:00Z. Numeric times use seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z. ERDDAP always uses the UTC time zone.
Can I access ERDDAP data from a computer program?
Yes. ERDDAP's RESTful web services can be used directly from programs such as Matlab, R, or a custom program, and from web pages through HTML image tags or JavaScript.
Can an organization set up its own ERDDAP server?
Yes. Data providers can set up their own ERDDAP server and serve their own data, either through an existing web service or from source files or a database.
