About fractal

fractal is an open source Python project for running hierarchical agent loops. Each node works toward a goal in its own git worktree and can spawn child nodes for separable subtasks, forming a tree that expands with the problem. Loops run in tmux sessions or detached processes, with iterations, depth, children, cost and time bounded by hard caps. Run state including cost is recorded in a local SQLite database viewable in a terminal UI.

Nodes run without permission prompts by default and can execute any command with the user's credentials and machine access. A worktree isolates only the git branch, not the filesystem or network, so unsupervised tasks call for a sandboxed or disposable host and operator oversight.

Key features

  • Tree of agent nodes in separate git worktrees for subtasks
  • Hard caps on iterations, depth, children, cost and time
  • Local SQLite storage for runs, iterations, costs and signals
  • Terminal UI to view run metadata live
  • Supports five agent backends selectable per node
  • CLI and /fractal skill with plain-language directives
Best for: Developers comfortable supervising autonomous coding agents across branched, multi-part tasks.
Good for
  • Local SQLite database records runs, steps, signals and cost
  • Hard caps and operator steering bound each loop
  • Works with five agent backends with per-node selection
Watch out for
  • Nodes run without permission prompts by default
  • Nodes can run any command with the user's credentials and machine reach
  • Worktree isolation covers the git branch only, not filesystem or network

fractal FAQ

How do I install the package?
Install from PyPI with pip install plasma-fractal or pip install fractal. Isolated installs via pipx or uv tool install are also described.
Which agent backends can nodes use?
Claude Code, Codex, Grok Build, OpenCode, and Oh My Pi, selected per node with --agent. Children inherit the parent setting.
Where is run metadata stored?
In one local SQLite database covering runs, iterations, steps, costs and signals, viewable live with fractal open from the project root.
