About git-sim

git-sim is a terminal tool that shows what a Git command would do in the user's own repository. It uses Git-like syntax, such as git-sim merge , and generates an image by default or a video showing the command's effect. It outputs jpg, png, mp4, or webm files, with dark mode by default, light mode option, and commit coloring such as by author. It requires installing Manim and its dependencies, includes a bundled git-dummy command to create a test repository, and animated output can be slow to generate.

Key features

  • Simulate Git commands from terminal into JPG image by default
  • Generate animated MP4 video with --animate flag
  • Output in jpg, png, mp4, or webm formats
  • Color commits by author with --color-by option
  • Dark mode by default with light mode option
  • Bundled git-dummy creates test repo with branches and commits
Best for: Visual learners, educators, and teams who want to preview and document Git operations.
