About Iiab

Internet-in-a-Box (IIAB) is open source software for building an offline digital library on a small server, such as a Raspberry Pi. The homepage describes it as a "learning hotspot" for places without Internet access, including schools, medical clinics, prisons, regions, and families. Users can reach the library from nearby smartphones, tablets, or laptops.

The project includes tools to choose and arrange content. Users can download content packs and arrange them with drag-and-drop, select from more than 30 educational apps, and optionally add a learning management system. A Manage Content interface supports sharing local content with nearby communities, with possible mesh networking. The software is installed using Ansible, and the homepage notes that content packs can be multiple gigabytes and take time to download.

Key features

  • Offline library hosting Wikipedia, Khan Academy videos, OpenStreetMap, and e-books
  • Drag-and-drop admin console for arranging content packs and apps
  • Choice of more than 30 educational apps, with an optional learning management system
  • Manage Content interface for sharing local knowledge, with possible mesh networking
  • One-line installer for Linux distributions
  • Prebuilt disk images that can be flashed to a microSD card for Raspberry Pi
Best for: Schools, clinics, libraries, and community groups that want an offline digital library for people without Internet access.
Good for
  • Open source, with the code hosted in a public GitHub repository
  • Offers prebuilt disk images as an alternative to a manual Linux installation on Raspberry Pi
  • Content can be shared with nearby devices, so it does not require an Internet connection once set up
Watch out for
  • Multi-gigabyte content packs can take a long time to download
  • Installing on a Linux distribution that has not been tested requires more detailed guidance from the installation wiki
  • Pre-release versions are recommended by the project, so users must choose between them and stable releases
