About ImageOptim

ImageOptim is a Mac application that reduces image file sizes for web use and to save disk space. Users drag images into its window, and the app runs several optimization tools, including MozJPEG, pngquant, Pngcrush, 7zip, SVGO and Google Zopfli, then keeps the smallest result. The homepage states that the default compression preserves image quality.

The app can also remove embedded data such as GPS position, camera serial number, embedded thumbnails, comments and unnecessary color profiles before images are published. An option keeps metadata if it is needed. Lossy minification is optional and changes image quality in exchange for smaller files. The current version requires macOS 11 or later, and the homepage links to an older version for Mac computers running OS X Yosemite (10.10). The homepage states that ImageOptim is not in the Apple App Store.

ImageOptim FAQ

Can I keep copyright and camera information in my images?
Yes. Uncheck Strip JPEG metadata in Preferences.
How can I make PNG optimization run faster?
In Preferences, uncheck PNGOUT and Zopfli. Optimization runs much quicker without them but is somewhat less effective.
Is ImageOptim available in the App Store?
No. The homepage says Apple's App Store terms do not allow its license, and it warns users about knock-off apps in the App Store.
