About Kurtosis

Kurtosis is a packaging system and runtime for defining and launching ephemeral backend and blockchain stacks. Stack definitions can run on Docker or Kubernetes, with per-stack file management for initializing state and parameterization for creating variations. It is intended for local development and testing, including reuse of the same definitions for CI and larger ad-hoc tests. It is not recommended for long-term production environments.

Key features

  • Packaging system for distributing backend stack definitions
  • Launch ephemeral stacks on Docker or Kubernetes
  • Per-stack file management for reproducible state initialization
  • Stack-level parameterization beyond environment variables
  • Import stack definitions into larger composable stacks
  • Pass data between services and enforce wait conditions at startup
Best for: Developers who need to share and launch ephemeral backend or blockchain stacks for local development and testing.
Good for
  • Runs the same stack definitions on Docker or Kubernetes
  • Reuses definitions for local dev, CI testing, and larger-scale testing
  • Open source with packaging for one-line setup of applications
Watch out for
  • Not recommended for long-term production environments
