About LACT

LACT is an open-source Linux application for configuring and monitoring AMD, Nvidia, or Intel GPUs through a desktop interface. Its GPU configuration is handled by a system service, which does not depend on a graphical session (Wayland or X11). The service can also run standalone with a config file, for example on headless systems.

The feature set covers detailed GPU information, historical monitoring charts, power cap, fan curves, clock configuration, and undervolting. Several features are limited by vendor: power states are AMD only, and firmware thermal options are AMD RDNA3+ only. Nvidia support requires the Nvidia proprietary driver with CUDA libraries installed. Availability depends on the distribution. The .deb package requires Debian 12+ or Ubuntu 22.04+, and openSUSE is supported only on Tumbleweed. The service must be enabled before settings can be changed.

Key features

  • Reports GPU name, manufacturer, VBIOS, VRAM, and Vulkan details
  • Configurable historical charts for power, thermals, and frequency
  • Power cap setting, with power states available on AMD only
  • Custom fan curves on AMD and Nvidia GPUs
  • GPU and VRAM clock configuration with undervolting support
  • Settings profiles that activate based on running processes or gamemode status
Best for: Linux users with AMD, Nvidia, or Intel GPUs who want a graphical tool to monitor and adjust their GPU settings.
Good for
  • Open source, with the source code published on GitHub
  • Configuration runs in a system service that does not depend on a graphical session
  • Available through several distribution packages, Flatpak, and a Docker option for the service without the GUI
Watch out for
  • Nvidia support requires the proprietary driver with CUDA libraries installed
  • Several features, including power states and some thermal options, apply only to AMD GPUs
  • Installation depends on distribution version, and openSUSE support is limited to Tumbleweed

LACT FAQ

Does LACT need the Nvidia proprietary driver?
Yes. The source states that Nvidia support requires the Nvidia proprietary driver with CUDA libraries installed.
Why can't I change GPU settings after installing?
The lactd system service must be enabled and started first. The source says that without it, settings cannot be changed. The command given is sudo systemctl enable --now lactd.
Can LACT run without a graphical session?
The GPU configuration service does not depend on a graphical session, and it can be used standalone with a config file, for example in headless setups.
