About LiveCaptions
LiveCaptions is an open-source Linux desktop application that provides live captioning for desktop or microphone audio. It runs locally, using the aprilasr library for realtime speech recognition, and the project states that audio is never sent anywhere and that it does not rely on proprietary services or libraries. Captions can be styled by adjusting font, font size and text casing, with optional token-level confidence text fading.
The application currently supports only English; other languages may produce gibberish or a bad phonetic translation. Caption accuracy is not guaranteed and the project advises against relying on results for anything critical or important. It requires a somewhat-decent CPU for realtime captioning, especially alongside other tasks; a GPU is not required or used. It is distributed as a repository with build instructions and is licensed under GPL-3.0.
