About Maestro

Maestro is a Python framework and set of scripts that demonstrates AI-assisted task breakdown and execution. A top-level model (Claude Opus in the default script) splits an objective into sub-tasks, a smaller model (Claude Haiku) carries out each sub-task while retaining memory of earlier sub-tasks, and the top-level model refines the results into a final output. The repository includes a search option that uses a Tavily API key to help with sub-tasks, and it has been updated to use LiteLLM so that models from other providers can be selected. Separate scripts cover GPT-4o, Groq, LM Studio, and Ollama.

The default setup requires an Anthropic API key, and other hosted providers require their own keys. Search requires a separate Tavily key. Local setups require installing LM Studio or Ollama and downloading the models to be used.

Key features

  • Breaks an objective into sub-tasks using the Opus model
  • Executes each sub-task using the Haiku model
  • Gives the Haiku model memory of previous sub-tasks for context
  • Refines sub-task results into a final output using the Opus model
  • Saves a detailed exchange log to a Markdown file
  • Creates code files and folders when working on code projects
Best for: Python developers who want to study or experiment with a multi-model workflow that splits an objective into sub-tasks.
Good for
  • Model choice can be changed through LiteLLM, which supports several providers
  • Includes local setup options using LM Studio and Ollama
  • Records the full task breakdown and execution process in a log file
Watch out for
  • The default setup requires an Anthropic API key
  • The search feature requires a separate Tavily API key
  • Local setups require installing LM Studio or Ollama and downloading models

Maestro FAQ

What do I need to run Maestro?
The README lists Python, an Anthropic API key, and the Python packages anthropic and rich. The repository also includes a requirements file for installation.
Can Maestro use models other than Claude?
Yes. The README says the code was rewritten with LiteLLM so that models from providers such as Gemini, OpenAI, and Cohere can be selected by setting API keys and model names. Separate scripts are included for GPT-4o, Groq, LM Studio, and Ollama.
Can Maestro run with local models?
The README describes local options through LM Studio and Ollama. Each requires installing the local app and downloading the model to be used.
