About Minuimus

Minuimus is a Perl script that makes files smaller by decompressing internal data and recompressing it more efficiently. By default it uses transparent optimization that preserves image pixels, audio and video quality, and metadata, though it may remove essentially useless information such as edit history in PDFs.

It automates use of many external utilities, recursively processes ZIP-based containers such as ZIP, EPUB and DOCX before reassembling them, and skips files it cannot optimize. Format-changing or lossy conversions are disabled unless explicitly enabled by command-line option.

Key features

  • Transparent optimization preserves image pixels and audio/video quality
  • Recursively processes ZIP containers such as EPUB, DOCX, ZIP
  • Optimizes listed images, documents, archives, JAR, FLAC, MP3, SWF
  • Optional lossy or format conversions require explicit command-line option
  • Performs integrity checking to prevent damage to optimized files
  • Automatically invokes Leanify when installed for additional compression
Best for: Best for users comfortable installing dependencies and running a command-line script to reduce file sizes.
Good for
  • Default settings preserve pixels, audio/video quality and metadata
  • Extracts, optimizes and reassembles files inside container formats
  • Skips unsupported files and runs integrity checks
Watch out for
  • Depends on many external utilities that must be installed separately
  • Windows use requires Strawberry Perl and bundled dependencies, with less testing
  • Size reduction varies by file and can be minimal for some types

Minuimus FAQ

Does Minuimus change file contents by default?
By default it uses transparent optimization that preserves image pixels, audio and video quality, and metadata, but it may delete essentially useless information such as edit history in PDFs.
Does it automatically convert file formats?
No. Non-transparent conversion, such as CBR to CBZ or PNG to WebP, is disabled unless explicitly specified by command-line option.
What do I need to do to optimize files?
Install the prerequisites and run a single command pointing Minuimus at the files; it will optimize those it can and skip those it cannot.
