About piia-engram

piia-engram is an open-source, local-first personal AI identity layer for MCP-compatible coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Windsurf. It stores your preferences, quality standards, lessons learned, decisions, and project context as JSON and Markdown files under ~/.engram/, so several coding agents can start from the same understanding of you. The project describes itself as a user-owned layer above each tool's native memory, not an agent memory database.

AI-proposed writes are governed by an approval policy. High-risk items, including credentials, shell commands, MCP configuration, and permission rules, wait for user review. Low and medium writes are absorbed automatically but remain auditable and reversible. The ENGRAM_APPROVAL=strict setting gates every write. A "verified" item means it was accepted by the user or by the configured policy; it is not re-checked against current code. Session resume output can also include unreviewed checkpoints and snapshots, which do not authorize actions. The core store does not require a cloud account, but the source does not describe every external service that may be involved.

Key features

  • Keeps preferences, lessons, decisions, and project context as local JSON or Markdown files
  • Memory Lens preview shows what an AI caller would receive and what governance withheld
  • High-risk items such as credentials and shell commands wait for user review
  • Low and medium writes are auto-absorbed, auditable, and reversible
  • Strict approval mode gates every write through the ENGRAM_APPROVAL=strict setting
  • Setup wizard lists config files it will change and backs them up before writing
Best for: Developers who use several MCP-compatible coding agents and want a shared, user-owned set of preferences and project context that they can review and edit.
Good for
  • Core store lives on the user's machine and does not require a cloud account
  • Open source repository with documented trust model, privacy, and security notes
  • Users can review high-risk items and audit or reverse low and medium writes
Watch out for
  • Session resume output can include unreviewed checkpoints and snapshots that do not authorize actions
  • "Verified" means accepted by the user or policy, not re-checked against current code
  • Approval and review claims apply only to identity and long-term knowledge under the configured policy
