About Stable Dreamfusion

Stable Dreamfusion is a PyTorch implementation of the text-to-3D DreamFusion model, using the Stable Diffusion text-to-2D model as guidance. It also supports image-to-3D generation through Zero-1-to-3 and Omnidata checkpoints, and mesh exportation with NeRF and diffusion backbones.

Key features

  • Text-to-3D generation using a PyTorch DreamFusion implementation powered by Stable Diffusion
  • Image-to-3D generation via Zero-1-to-3 and Omnidata depth/normal checkpoints
  • Mesh exportation with NeRF and diffusion backbones
  • Instant-NGP backbone with multi-resolution grid encoder for faster rendering
  • Optional Taichi backend for Instant-NGP without a CUDA build
  • Includes DMTet tetrahedron grids at 32/64/128 resolution
Best for: Researchers and developers with Python and PyTorch experience who want to experiment with text- and image-conditioned 3D generation and mesh export.
Good for
  • Open-source repository installable with pip requirements and an optional virtual environment
  • Supports both text-to-3D and image-to-3D pipelines plus mesh export
  • Optional Taichi backend for Instant-NGP avoids a CUDA build
Watch out for
  • Stated to be a work in progress whose generation quality cannot match the original paper, with many prompts failing badly
  • Requires manually downloading pretrained checkpoints and setting up dependencies
  • DeepFloyd-IF use requires accepting Hugging Face usage conditions and logging in via the command line

Stable Dreamfusion FAQ

Does Stable Dreamfusion require a CUDA build?
An optional Taichi backend for Instant-NGP is provided that does not require a CUDA build and is described as achieving comparable performance to the CUDA implementation.
What must be downloaded before image-to-3D generation?
The Zero-1-to-3 checkpoint, zero123-xl.ckpt by default, plus the Omnidata depth and normal checkpoints used by preprocess_image.py.
Can it export 3D meshes?
Yes. The project describes mesh exportation with NeRF and diffusion and ports pre-generated DMTet tetrahedron grids at 32/64/128 resolution.
