SymbolicAI
SymbolicAI explores a neurosymbolic approach to large language models.

About SymbolicAI
SymbolicAI is an open-source Python repository for a neuro-symbolic framework that combines ordinary Python programming with large language models. Its central objects are Symbol values, which begin in syntactic mode and can be switched to semantic mode so operations such as equality, addition, logical combination, iteration, string helpers and similarity are interpreted by meaning. The project also applies design-by-contract ideas to LLM outputs through decorators and data models compatible with Pydantic.
Key features
- Combines Python code with LLM-backed semantic operations via Symbol objects
- Switches values between syntactic and semantic views with .sem and .syn
- Provides primitives for semantic comparison, arithmetic, logic, iteration and similarity
- Adds contract decorators with Pydantic-compatible data models and validation constraints
- Supports custom or locally hosted engines and modular extension
- Can interface with external tools such as web search or image generation
- Open-source and modular, with a design intended for extension and customization.
- Syntactic mode is the default, keeping ordinary Python operations fast; semantic behavior is opt-in.
- Includes primitives and contracts for building LLM-backed workflows in Python.
- Clustering requires the optional symbolicai[cluster] dependency.
- Users must choose or host an engine, including external tools, rather than relying on a bundled default.
