About L2MAC

L2MAC is an open-source Python framework that runs LLM agents to produce long, consistent outputs such as complete codebases from a short prompt. It creates a prompt-program of instruction steps, runs each step in an LLM agent with context managed by a control unit, and reads and writes intermediate and final results to a persistent file store.

It can be used from the command line or as a Python library, with generated code saved to a local ./workspace folder and returned as a dictionary. Use requires Python 3.7+ and configuration of an LLM provider, model, base URL, and API key.

Key features

  • Generate full codebase from single-line prompt
  • Output codebase as dictionary and local ./workspace folder
  • Self-generates and executes multi-step prompt-program
  • Reads and writes persistent file-store memory via tools
  • Checks syntax errors and runs existing unit tests
  • Usable via CLI or Python library import
Best for: Developers who want to generate a full application codebase from a short prompt using Python and their own LLM API key.
Good for
  • Open source with CLI and Python library use
  • Designed to produce outputs longer than a single LLM context window
  • Includes syntax checks and unit test runs for code tasks
Watch out for
  • Requires Python 3.7+ installation and setup
  • Requires user to configure LLM provider and API key
