About Tasmota

Tasmota is open-source alternative firmware for ESP8266 and ESP32 family microcontroller devices. It provides configuration through a web interface, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and automation using timers or rules. Devices can be controlled locally over MQTT, HTTP, Serial, or KNX.

The firmware runs standalone with no server, or it can connect to a user's own MQTT broker or a cloud broker over TLS, such as AWS IoT Core or Azure IoT Hub. Cloud connections are optional, so the privacy of a given setup depends on how it is configured. The project is written for PlatformIO, a development tool, and the source describes it as covering devices from the ESP8266/ESP8285 to several ESP32 variants.

Key features

  • Alternative firmware for ESP8266 and ESP32 family devices
  • Web interface configuration and over-the-air (OTA) updates
  • Timers and rules for on-device automation
  • Local control over MQTT, HTTP, Serial, or KNX
  • Native Matter support on ESP32 without a separate hub
  • 150+ supported sensors and peripherals over I²C, SPI, 1-Wire, and analog
Best for: Makers and home automation users who want to flash, configure, and control ESP8266 or ESP32 devices locally.
Good for
  • Open-source firmware with a public repository
  • Can run standalone with no server required
  • Supports local control over MQTT, HTTP, Serial, and KNX
Watch out for
  • Limited to ESP8266, ESP8285, and ESP32 family hardware

Tasmota FAQ

Does Tasmota need a server to work?
No. It can run entirely standalone with no server. It can also connect to your own MQTT broker or a cloud broker over TLS.
Can Tasmota devices work with Matter?
On ESP32, Tasmota runs Matter natively without MQTT, a hub, or a companion app. The source states that it pairs directly with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Home Assistant.
What kinds of sensors are supported?
The source lists more than 150 sensors and peripherals over I²C, SPI, 1-Wire, and analog interfaces, including temperature, humidity, CO2, air quality, energy monitoring, and motion sensors. Most are auto-detected once wired.
