About AI Legion

AI Legion is an open-source framework for running autonomous agents powered by large language models. The agents are designed to work together on tasks. The project is set up with Node and npm. It needs an OpenAI API key, and web search also requires a Google Custom Search engine ID and API key, with the Google Custom Search API enabled on the Google Cloud account. Agents are started from the command line with a chosen number of agents and a model, either gpt-3.5-turbo or gpt-4. Messages typed into the console are sent to all running agents.

Each agent saves its memory, goals and notes in a local .store directory, so it resumes where it left off when restarted. Developers can delete stored state to reset an agent, or remove later memory events to replay a moment and debug a problem. New agents often make action errors early on. The README warns that gpt-3.5-turbo agents can enter endless error loops that use tokens quickly, and advises never leaving an agent unattended.

Key features

  • Starts a chosen number of autonomous agents from the command line
  • Lets you select gpt-3.5-turbo or gpt-4 as the model at startup
  • Sends console messages to all currently running agents
  • Supports agent web search through the Google Custom Search API
  • Stores each agent's memory, goals and notes in a local directory
  • Allows deleting or editing stored events to replay and debug an agent
Best for: Developers who are comfortable with Node, npm and API key setup and want to experiment with LLM-driven autonomous agents.
Good for
  • Open source under the MIT license
  • Agent state persists between runs, which supports replaying and debugging a specific moment
Watch out for
  • Requires an OpenAI API key and, for web search, a Google Custom Search setup
  • The README advises against leaving agents unattended because error loops can consume tokens quickly
  • gpt-3.5-turbo agents sometimes get stuck in endless error loops

AI Legion FAQ

What do I need before running AI Legion?
The README says you need at least Node 10, an OpenAI API key, and a .env file with your secrets. For web search you also need a Google Custom Search engine ID and API key, and the Google Custom Search API must be enabled on your Google Cloud account.
What happens to agent state when I stop and restart?
Each agent stores its state under the .store directory, so agents pick up where they left off on restart. You can delete individual files, an agent folder, or the whole .store directory to reset state between runs.
Can agents run without supervision?
The README advises against it. It notes that agents often make errors when first started, and that error loops can use tokens quickly, especially with high-token-count actions such as writeFile.
