About Argo Workflows

Argo Workflows is an open source, container-native workflow engine for running parallel jobs on Kubernetes. It is implemented as a Kubernetes Custom Resource Definition (CRD), and each workflow step runs as a container. Multi-step workflows can be modeled as a sequence of tasks or as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) that captures dependencies between tasks. The source names machine learning pipelines, data and batch processing, infrastructure automation, and CI/CD as use cases. Argo is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) graduated project. Because it runs on Kubernetes, a Kubernetes cluster is required. The source states that it can run on any Kubernetes cluster.

Key features

  • Define workflows in which each step runs as a container
  • Model steps as a task sequence or as a directed acyclic graph (DAG)
  • Scheduled workflows using cron
  • Artifact support for S3, GCS, Azure Blob Storage, Git, HTTP, and other sources
  • Retry, timeout, and suspend/resume at step and workflow level
  • Server interface with REST API (HTTP and gRPC)
Best for: Engineers and data or machine learning teams who run multi-step compute jobs on Kubernetes and want to define them in code.
Good for
  • Open source
  • Cloud agnostic; the source states it can run on any Kubernetes cluster
  • Client libraries listed for Java, Golang, Python (Hera), and Typescript (Juno)
Watch out for
  • Requires Kubernetes, since it is implemented as a Kubernetes CRD
