About Checkmate

Checkmate is an open-source, self-hosted application for monitoring server hardware, uptime, response times and incidents. It regularly checks whether servers and websites are reachable and performing as expected, and reports on availability, downtime and response time. Optional extension through the project's Capture agent adds CPU, RAM, disk and temperature data from remote machines; the agent is not required to run Checkmate and can run on Linux, Windows, Mac, Raspberry Pi or any device that runs Go.

Deployment centers on Docker: the reference Docker Compose file starts an all-in-one Checkmate image alongside a separate MongoDB service, which is required and not embedded in the application image. Configuration is handled through environment variables, including a MongoDB connection string, a JWT secret and the client host used for CORS and notification links. An optional encryption key protects stored Docker TLS client keys at rest. Administrators need Docker and Git, and the project states it has been stress-tested with more than 1000 active monitors.

Key features

  • Real-time checks of server and website uptime and response times
  • Alerts and reports on availability, downtime and response time
  • Optional Capture agent reports CPU, RAM, disk and temperature
  • Docker Compose deployment with bundled or external MongoDB
  • Configuration via environment variables including MongoDB string and JWT secret
  • Helm chart for Kubernetes deployments
Best for: Teams and administrators who want to self-host an open-source monitoring tool for servers, websites and incidents.
Good for
  • Open source and self-hosted, so data and deployment stay under the operator's control
  • Optional Capture agent adds hardware metrics such as CPU, RAM, disk and temperature
  • Project reports stress-testing with over 1000 active monitors
  • Several one-click installation options and a hosted demo are offered
Watch out for
  • Requires Docker and Git, plus a MongoDB instance that is not embedded in the application image
  • The Helm chart has not been migrated to the all-in-one image and still deploys legacy client, backend and mongo images pinned at v3.8.1
  • Pricing information is not stated in the source material

Is the Capture agent required to run Checkmate?
No. Capture is optional; it provides additional insights about a server's CPU, RAM, disk and temperature status and can run on Linux, Windows, Mac, Raspberry Pi or any device that can run Go.
What has to be installed before deploying Checkmate?
Docker and Git are listed as prerequisites. The reference Docker Compose setup starts the all-in-one Checkmate image and a separate MongoDB service, since MongoDB is required and not embedded in the application image.
Which configuration settings are mandatory?
DB_CONNECTION_STRING, JWT_SECRET and CLIENT_HOST are required environment variables. ENCRYPTION_KEY is optional and is used to encrypt stored Docker TLS client keys at rest.
