About CodeAlmanac

CodeAlmanac is an open source tool that builds and maintains a wiki for a codebase, intended for use by AI coding agents. The wiki records context that the code alone does not show, such as why a system is shaped the way it is, what broke before, which invariants matter, and how workflows cross files and services. The wiki is stored as plain markdown in the repository, indexed locally, and reviewed in Git like other code changes.

The command-line tool provides commands to initialize a wiki, search it, show individual pages, list topics, check health, validate content, and open a local web viewer. On macOS, setup can install three background jobs that scan recent Codex and Claude conversations, review registered wikis for stale or duplicated knowledge, and check for CodeAlmanac updates. The repository states that these jobs and all wiki work run locally. Supported platforms are currently macOS with Codex or Claude Code, and Python 3.12 or later is required.

Key features

  • Records decisions, flows, invariants, and gotchas that code alone does not express
  • Stores the wiki as plain markdown files inside the Git repository
  • Indexes the wiki locally and supports search, show, topics, health, and validate commands
  • Provides a local web viewer through the serve command
  • Installs optional macOS background jobs for syncing conversations, wiki cleanup, and updates
  • Reads other registered local wikis with the --wiki option
Best for: Developers on macOS who use Codex or Claude Code and want AI coding agents to work with stored project context in a Git-tracked wiki.
Good for
  • The wiki is plain markdown in the repository and is reviewed through Git
  • Indexing and reading commands run locally, according to the repository
  • Setup offers choices to turn off the background sync, cleanup, and update jobs
Watch out for
  • Currently supported only on macOS, with Codex or Claude Code
  • Requires Python 3.12 or later
  • Lifecycle agents are described as trusted local coding agents with broad, non-interactive filesystem permissions

CodeAlmanac FAQ

How can I turn off anonymous telemetry?
Choose No when asked during setup, run setup with --no-telemetry, set telemetry.enabled to false, or set DO_NOT_TRACK=1 at any time. The repository states that telemetry sends command and lifecycle outcomes and sanitized crash reports under a random install UUID, and that it does not send code, paths, arguments, queries, prompts, or transcripts.
What does the automatic sync job do?
By default, the sync job runs every 5 hours. It scans recent Codex and Claude conversations and queues useful knowledge for the relevant registered wiki. Setup can change the interval or turn the job off.
Which platforms and runtimes are supported?
The repository lists macOS with Codex or Claude Code as the supported setup today and requires Python 3.12 or later.
